East Wind Land Nav Training weekend Oct 24th – 25th

What:
A weekend of land navigation training exercises focused on the skills needed to make you an effective navigator in both daylight and night time conditions.

When:
Saturday October 24th starting at 09:00 ending on Sunday Oct. 25th  at about 12:00 noon.

Where: Mark Twain National Forest Cedar Creek Ranger District

Directions to Cedar Creek
Take I-70 to Exit 137 and take J highway south through Millersburg continuing till you come to County road 354.

Turn right on 354 and follow it as it becomes narrower and narrower you will eventually come to a dead end with a turnaround. This is where we will be operating.

How much $?
Cost for this event is $25 and as usual includes all food

What do attendees need to bring?
This course is taught “on the march” so attendees will need to have the following:
  • Rucksack or Veshmeshok
  • Sleeping bag or wool blankets (optional for East Bloc troops)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Shelter half, plasch or bivy bag
  • Rain gear
  • Properly fitted boots
  • Properly fitted uniform
  • USGI compass or NVA/Soviet Engineer compass (loaners are available)
  • Red filtered flashlight
  • Mess kit and silverware  (sheesh, seriously…  Who forgets a spoon?)
  • Capacity to carry a minimum of 2 liters of water on your person
  • Boo boo kit (Bandaids, ibuprofen, antacids, allergy meds, whatever)
  • Spare pair of socks
  • Clothing appropriate to the weather
  • Pen and paper (suggest waterproof pad and a pencil)
EVERYTHING you will be using for the weekend must be packed in your rucksack/Veshmeshok.

What should attendees expect?
This course is taught station by station with each period of instruction followed by a practical application exercise of the skill you just learned that takes you to the next station. This will make it easier to absorb the material being taught plus give everyone a chance to get out and use his or her gear a bit. Distances walked will be reasonable but challenging. Overall course should put about 15 kilometers on your feet over the two days. Attendees who pass this course will have the skills needed to plot a course, navigate their course successfully in day or night conditions, be able to triangulate their location, read and use a military grid map (either US or Soviet) as well as know and be able to use their pace count.

Who should attend?
This course is open to anyone of reasonable fitness who is interested in learning land navigation.

How do I sign up?

It is advisable to bring your helmet with cat eyes, if you have got them. It helps when your taking limbs in the head on night ops. And maybe knee pads for you guys that have tendencies to fall off bluffs. Cheesy

My requisition list for the "Mobile" CP / Comms Center:

2x pack boards
1x field table
1x large AO map
2x R-105M radios and operator's kits, don't need carry straps, can be strapped to boards.
1x KFG-78 (only really need the speaker box and wires since that's all that will be used)
1x TA-57 with battery for R-105M interface testing
grenade box with radio goodies (obviously won't hump the box up to PB)

And, of course, water and MRE's for transport to the patrol base- looking at 20 guys on the list, not sure if all staff will be up there at night though.  Sounds like somewhere between 5-10 gallons water?  5 might be short.

My plan is to set up CP near the staging area in the AM, and move to the PB around 16:00, being on line and set up there around 18:00.  (Times contingent on progress of elements through the course)

I plan on doing any radio tinkering in the early part of the session.

What's the status of R-105M power packs?

We are good to go on water.

We are also bringing a GP Small down to hand off to Matt.  Given that I probably need to show Matt how it goes up and down anyhow I figure we can set it up tonight and perhaps even stuff a wood stove in it so that everyone staying the night will have a good hideout since tonight is supposed to be the only crappy weather for the weekend.   Abica can also use it for HQ work tomorrow if needed.

I have also got the 5 man arctic in the car in the event it decides to stay crappy.  It is portable enough to move up to the patrol base if needed and serve as a HQ tent up there for Abica and a general crashing out in tent for at least 5-6 guys (the 5 man routinely sleeps 6+ gear)
