Hmm didnt know about the osage oranges!

This was a good skill brush up/expansion event for me as well along with a chance to try out new kit. I ran my Ardean ensemble which worked fairly well though I'm always looking for ways to go lighter/smaller/more multi use with my kit.

On that note does anyone know about the austrian shelter halves? I read they are a more modern (aka ligher/smaller) version of the USGI one but i wasn't sure if it was as good of quality or compatible with the usgi ones. Are there commercial offerings out there? I haven't found many. I've found that I like tarps in the summer but nothing beats a von rec (sp?) in the winter so i'd like to stick with the shelter half design.

I just picked one up yesterday! They do seem lighter than the US ones I've seen but I don't have one to compare compatibility. The local shop I got mine from has several and I'm even going back to pick up a second one.

They are significantly lighter than USGI which weighs ~4.45.  An Austrian one weighs ~2.6.

I think they are identical in make up, just lighter materials.  If you're not in a rush I can borrow a canvas one this weekend and then dig out an Austrian one to check.

No rush, that would be much appreciated! I probably won't use a shelter half until Swift Fox

Yes the Aus ones are significantly lighter being rubberized nylon type stuff.  You can carry a whole AUS pup tent for the weight of a USGI canvas shelter half. These are sold as a pair generally, so you can have a whole tent.

No, the Aus ones are not compatible with the USGI ones.

Yes, the Aus ones are just slightly smaller than the USGI ones.

USGI 5.03 lbs
AUS 2.08 lbs

Those aluminum pegs look identical to the bw ones, although the poles are different.  Be warned that ddap rocks eat them for supper -every time I depolyed them I'd have to stick 3 bent pegs in a vise to re-straighten them.
