ROUTINE MESSAGE TRAFFIC

FROM: COMBERBDE

TO: COM315RADRELCODBB

CLASSIFICATION: TOP SECRET

15 MARCH 1991 1013L

FRAGO UPDATING PREVIOUS ORDERS.

SITUATION:
THE EAST GERMAN GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN INCREASINGLY NEUTRAL TO UNSUPPORTIVE OF THE APPARENT SOVIET COMBAT GOALS. OVERNIGHT, THEIR ARMED FORCES HAVE BEEN MOSTLY PULLED OUT OF ACTION WITH NATO. UNITS ALONG THE BORDER HAVE PULLED BACK TO THEIR BORDER, OR IN SOME CASES SEVERAL MILES FURTHER, BUT WAIT IN APPARENT READYNESS.

ALSO OVERNIGHT, MOST BORDER CONTROL POINTS INTO CZECHOSLOVAKIA HAVE BEEN OPENED, AND IN SOME CASES APPARENTLY ABANDONED. THE CZECH GOVERNMENT HAS ALLOWED ALMOST UNRESTRICTED ENTRY OF THE MANY THOUSANDS OF GERMAN REFUGEES. LINES TO EXIT GERMANY ARE OVER 10 MILES LONG AS OF THIS MORNING. CZECH ARMED FORCES HAVE EITHER RETURNED TO THEIR BASES OR APPEAR TO BE ESCORTING SOVIET FORCES TO THE EAST.

SOVIET FORCES IN POLAND HAVE CLOSED THOSE BORDER CROSSINGS TO ALL BUT MILITARY TRAFFIC, AND EAST GERMAN MILITARY FORCES APPEAR TO BE FACING OFF WITH THE SOVIET FORCES ACROSS THE BORDER. PARTS OF POLAND ARE IN OPEN REBELLION, AND THE GOVERNMENT APPEARS TO HAVE FALLEN.

PROTESTS OVERNIGHT IN BERLIN HAVE BEEN FOCUSED ON THE GOVERNMENT CENTER, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN NO OFFICAL STATEMENTS FROM ANY GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS REGARDNG ANY OF THESE DEVELOPMENTS.

THE STATE TELEVISION STATION HAS BEGUN BROADCASTING NEWS OF THE PROTESTS, HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE OPENING OF BORDER CROSSINGS, AND IS BROADCASTING WHAT APPEARS TO BE TRUTHFUL INFORMATION ON SOVIET TROOP POSITIONS AND ACTIVITIES.

SOVIET FORCES AND SOME GERMAN BORDER GUARD UNITS CONTINUE TO PURSUE OBJECTIVES, ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH THE DEEPEST SALIENTS INTO WEST GERMANY OR WEST BERLIN.

THE SOVIET UNION HAS ALSO MADE NO PUBLIC STATEMENTS ON THE SITUATION IN EASTERN EUROPE IN ALMOST AN ENTIRE DAY.

THE MOST LIKELY ENEMY COA IS RETIREMENT FROM THE BATTLEFIELD. BE PREPARED TO ACCEPT LOCALIZED AND AD HOC CEASEFIRES. UNITS DEPLOYED DEEPLY MAY ATTEMPT TO RETURN TO FRIENDLY LINES FIRST, SO MAY WITHDRAW WITH SIGNIFICANT COVERING FIRES. RETIRING ENEMY UNITS MAY BE FIRED UPON BY ADJACENT ENEMY UNITS.

THE MOST DANGEROUS ENEMY COA IS THE INDEPENDENT EMPLOYMENT BY SOVIET FORCES OF NBC WEAPONS WITHOUT WARNING. MONITOR EARLY WARNING SYSTEMS AND COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS SO YOU STAND IN READYNESS.

MISSION:
NO CHANGE

EXECUTION:
CONTINUE TO DISRUPT ENEMY ACTIVITY.

CONSOLIDATE POSITIONS TO PROVIDE THE GREATEST TACTICAL ADVANTAGE TO YOUR FORCES IN THE EVENT OF FOLLOW-ON SOVIET ATTACKS.

YOU ARE STILL PERMITTED TO HOLD GROUND IN EAST GERMANY IF IT PROVIDES A LOCAL TACTICAL ADVANTAGE. THERE IS NO NEED TO ADJUST LINES EXCEPT TO AVOID EXPOSING FLANKS AND FOR OTHER OPERATIONAL/TACTICAL NEEDS. COORDINATE WITH ADJACENT UNITS AS AVAILABLE.

REPORT MAJOR CHANGES IN ENEMY DISPOSITION, SUCH AS RETIREMENT FROM THE BATTLEFIELD, WITHOUT DELAY AND BE MINDFUL OF OVER-RUNNING ENEMY POSITIONS IN THE EVENT OF A SUDDEN LOSS OF RESISTANCE.

AVOID FIRING ON EAST GERMAN FORCES UNLESS THEY PRESENT A CLEAR THREAT OR ARE OVERTLY ENGAGED IN OFFENSIVE MILITARY ACTIONS.

SERVICE AND SUPPORT:
NO CHANGE

COMMAND AND SIGNAL:
NO CHANGE.

So let me get this straight, the East German forces still operating with the GSFG are in a sense becoming a volunteer force that wishes to seek asylum in the Soviet Union?

East German troops were given a choice to go with the Soviets or stay behind and live in the changing climate of western imperialist expansionism that the SED was supporting.

In the end - all East German troops decided to throw their fate fully into the eternal goal of the Socialist dream and all paid for it with their lives.  It was not without gain since as they fought against overwhelming odds and a British armored column, the Soviet troops were able to break through to the helipad and be whisked away on Mi-8s to the SU.

I see.  I just immediately thought that now there was a Soviet Foreign Legion service being formed in this alternate history, made up of the remnants of various WARPAC forces.

I know recovery naps need to be taken.  However, those of us who didn't make it or left early were hoping to get the rest of the story posted up.

Early early early on in the week I summarized the scenario as a "German Spring".  Easiest way to explain what was going on.

Also thought it was noble as shit that us HQ staff, along with the loyalist Germans died in an effort to get Soviet troops safely out of the country.  It was the best way the war could have ended for someone like me, sitting in a tent for 7 straight days, to go out guns blazing in a pile of empty magazines and grenade shrapnel.
